A helping career in six words

Helping others is a recurring theme in the six-word memoirs that 950 entries revealed in a contest sponsored by Civic Ventures.

Civic Ventures promotes the notion of “encore careers,” those jobs that matter to people in the second halves of their lives. Almost 1,000 people responded to the invitation to summarize their encore stories in just six words. Here are a few of the entries that touch on helping others:

  • My midlife crisis fixed my life.
  • Lost home, lost job, found purpose.
  • Following my passion is finally okay.
  • Looking for gift, gave of myself.
  • Returned to nonprofit world. Paradise regained.
  • Many jobs, one thread: social justice.
  • Investing in others pays big dividends.
  • Giving back what was freely given.

Among the top 10:

  • Lost my job. Found my purpose.
  • From power suits to passionate pursuits.

The grand prize winner:
