A tribute to philanthropy

Changing the world begins in our communities, and in that spirit we are observing National Philanthropy Day today, Nov. 15.

We are making the world a better place. As the Association of Fundraising Professionals says, today is “set aside to recognize and pay tribute to the great contributions that philanthropy–and those people active in the philanthropic community–have made to our lives, our communities and our world.”

Here is a brief video that sums up the spirit of the day:

What are you doing to observe National Philanthropy Day? One idea offered by Erik Anderson at The Healthy Non-Profit is to call donors and thank them for their generosity. Erik also suggested a list of ways an organization can demonstrate its focus on donors. Among the items on his list (see here for the full list):

  • Develop a procedure for response time and responsibility for thank-you phone calls for gifts more than a certain amount
  • Develop a policy on how to handle donor information
  • Determine at what dollar amount should asks be made face-to-face
  • Determine at what dollar amount should thank-you letters be signed by a board member
